Welcome to the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI)

AALI is committed to the broad development and support of leadership in higher education by creating and implementing programs and other forms of assistance that enable academic leaders in various administrative positions to be successful in their roles and to advance the institutions they serve.

AALI provides leadership identification, development, and support programs across all sectors of public and private higher education.

AALI also sponsors seminars and workshops; supports higher education research and publication; and consults with collegiate trustees and administrators, higher education researchers, and others on a wide range of topics related to leadership development, leadership support, and the successful administration of colleges and universities. Through national and regional conferences as well as consultation with individual campuses, academic leaders, and boards of trustees, AALI focuses on traditional and emerging issues facing higher education and its governance.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., AALI and its predecessor organizations have participated in the advancement of higher education for over 30 years.

Executive Leadership Academy

The Executive Leadership Academy (ELA) is a year-long program for individuals nominated by their chief executives that prepares experienced college and university cabinet officers to become successful presidents and chancellors. The program consists of two national seminars, readings, a year-long Experiential Plan, group work, executive coaching, and a mentorship experience.

Becoming A Provost Academy

The Becoming a Provost Academy (BAPA) is a year-long program that prepares experienced academic leaders and administrators to become successful chief academic officers/provosts. In conjunction with the American Association of State Colleges and University's (AASCU) semi-annual Academic Affairs Meetings, participants are acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of a cabinet level position through two national seminars, readings, experiential activities, executive coaching, and mentorship experiences.

Senior Leadership Academy

The Senior Leadership Academy (SLA), co-sponsored with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), identifies individuals through nominations and a national selection process for a year-long program to prepare them for senior leadership positions in independent colleges and universities. The need to prepare future leaders of colleges and universities has never been greater as the generation of people now in senior leadership positions on campus rapidly nears retirement.
